WATERPROOFING OF ROOF GARDEN (NEW CONSTRUCTION)

PERMANENT WATERPROOFING OF ROOF GARDEN (UNDER CONSTRUCTION) WITH PENETRON® INTEGRAL CAPILLARY WATERPROOFING AND WITH THE USE OF POLYOURETHANE MEMBRANE PENECOAT™ OR WITH CEMENT BASED POLYMER MODIFIED WATERPROOFING COATING SEAL COAT™ SYSTEM.

1. Concrete waterproofing and protection (roof slab), using PENETRON ADMIX®, integral crystalline admixture.

PΕΝΕΤRON ADMIX® is a waterproofing integral crystalline admixture, in powder form and the mixing ratios vary between 0.8 – 1%, by cement weight. Provided that the weight measurements are accurate, the consumption of 0.8% by weight of cement of PENETRON ADMIX® is sufficient and secure quantity. The product can be added directly, in its powder form, in the Ready-Mix Plant, in the aggregates (dry aggregates, before adding water, usually on the transport belt) or in the Ready-Mix Truck, but it must be diluted in the water, prior to mixing. Mix PΕΝΕΤRON ADMIX® with water, using a mixing drill. For better convenience, PΕΝΕΤRON ADMIX® mixing with water can be carried in batch operations. Mix 9 kg PΕΝΕΤRON ADMIX® 1/2 of the 18 kg bag with 11.5 kg water in the special formulated with volume tape Mixing Drum of 23 Lt of PΕΝΕΤRΟΝ® company, mixing for about 1 minute. The mixture is then poured into the truck and mixed for at least 5 minutes, after the last portion of PΕΝΕΤRON ADMIX®, at high speed, to ensure even distribution in the concrete mixture.

The use of certified superplasticizer with the waterproofing integral crystalline admixture is highly recommended, for even better performance, based on the best workability and overall highest quality concrete, so as to reduce the cost of any subsequent repairs. The superplasticizer is added at the beginning, always at high mixing speed and as for the example above, the three PΕΝΕΤRON ADMIX® Mixing Drums 23 Lt must be added within the next 4 – 5 minutes, at the same mixing speed and then mix for at least 5 minutes, after the last Mixing Drum, at high speed, to ensure even distribution in the concrete mixture. The mixing time in the truck at high speed, based on the use of a certified superplasticizer, is 8 – 10 minutes in total. Then, the concrete is ready to use.

NOTE: The used amount of PΕΝΕΤRON ADMIX® admixture in the concrete does not affect the normal practices of good concreting, liquidation, vibration and control curing.

For a complete permanent waterproofing and protection of the concrete, with the use of integral crystalline system, cold joints and cracks, such as tie holes, spalled and honeycombed areas, must be patched, repaired or sealed with crystalline waterproofing mortars, which are the liquid-applied PENETRON®, the repairing mortar PENECRETE MORTAR® and the rapid set waterstop PENEPLUG®. Conventional polymer-modified repairing mortars drastically reduce the function of the crystalline system, where they are applied. Cold joint can be sealed with the use of water expanding strips, PENEBAR® SW, to seal concrete joints, prior to concreting.

2. Application of cementitious screed for slopes

Initially, a bonding layer is applied with PRIMER STX 100™.

The cementitious screed should contain 400- 500 kg cement per cubic meter. Also, PENETRON ADMIX® 0.8 – 1% per weight of cement can be added, as well as acrylic resin PENETRON® LATEX with consumption 5 – 10% by cement weight and polypropylene fibers.

3. Application of hyperelastic membrane PENECOAT™ HYPER ELASTIC BLACK.

Over the cementitious mortar, the two-component, highly elastic, elastomeric polyurethane/bituminous resin, PENECOAT™ HYPER ELASTIC BLACK, is applied. The surface must be sound, clean, dry and free of loose particles, free from any impurities that may adversely affect the adhesion of the membrane. The moisture content must not exceed 5% and any surface irregularities must be sanded. Any loose particles or dust from sanding must be removed. Then, prime absorbent substrates such as concrete, cementitious mortars and wood with PENEPRIMER™ PU. For non-absorbent surfaces, such as metal, ceramic tiles, asphalt or bituminous membranes and old coatings, prime with PENEPOX™ W. Allow the primer to cure according to its technical instructions. Then, apply the PENECOAT™ HYPER ELASTIC BLACK A+B mixture onto the primed and prepared surface, using a roller, brush or notched trowel, until the entire surface is completely covered. It is recommended to reinforce PENECOAT™ HYPER ELASTIC BLACK A+B with FABRIC geotextile (on the first layer of fresh product). After 12-24 hours (no later than 72 hours), apply a second layer of PENECOAT™ HYPER ELASTIC BLACK A+B. After 24 hours, apply a third layer of PENECOAT™ HYPER ELASTIC BLACK A+B and then cover the third layer (sacrificial layer), with an indicative consumption of 0.5 kg/m2, while it is still wet, with dry quartz sand (QUARTZ SAND MIX, grain size 0.4-0.8 mm).

The coverage of PENECOAT™ HYPER ELASTIC BLACK is 1.1 – 1.5 Lt/m2, minimum, when applied in one or two layers. The use of FABRIC geotextile is expected to double the consumption of PENECOAT™ HYPER ELASTIC BLACK A+B per m2. This consumption is based on a roller coating, on an absorbent surface, under normal laboratory conditions. Factors such as the absorbency of the substrate, temperature, relative humidity, method of application and the desired final appearance (finish), may vary the recommended consumption.

Alternatively, SEAL COAT™, waterproofing, cementitious base with modified polymers coating could be applied

Dampen surface with clean water just prior to PENETRON® SEAL COAT™ ELASTIC ή FLEX application. Uniformly apply the first coat with a short bristle brush, making sure to fill in all surface pores and voids. PENETRON® SEAL COAT™ ELASTIC ή FLEX must be reinforced with a fiberglass grid between layers (mesh 5x5 mm) when applied between wall and floor. The next day a vertical second layer is applied.

Indicative consumption for PENETRON® SEAL COAT: ~2.5 - 3 Kg/m2

The consumption depends on the roughness of the substrate and the waterproofing demands. The use of fiberglass grid is expected to increase the total coverage of the system up to approximately 3 kg/m2 in 2 layers.

PENETRON® SEAL COAT™ (1 bag 22,68 kg) with the mix of 12 kg PENECRYL™ ELASTIC offers waterproofing with very good adhesion, flexibility, hyper elastic characteristics and excellent crack bridging ability. 4. Covering of the membrane with the use of geotextile.

In the end, follows the covering PENECOAT™ HYPER ELASTIC BLACK or SEAL COAT FLEX or SEAL COAT ELASTIC, with the use of appropriate geotextile FABRIC or similar protective drainage membrane, for protection reasons.

NOTE:

The above waterproofing system is called double secured safety system with the concrete slab to be protected by the integral crystalline system and by the help of the conventional waterproofing system.
