Hong Kong: The spectacular pool at Kennedy Town.<\/p>\n

Completed earlier this year, the pool complex includes a 50m outdoor pool, an outdoor leisure pool, indoor and outdoor massage baths, an indoor swimming pool of 50 meters<\/a> and an indoor training pool. It also incorporates a sheltered outdoor garden<\/a> below the edge of the building's characteristic roof.<\/p>\n

Built on a derelict plot of land next to Victoria Harbour, the pool has helped revitalize a forgotten corner of the otherwise vibrant Kennedy Town, a historic district not far from Hong Kong's city centre. "We've been working in Kennedy Town for almost a decade now," commented Stefan Krummeck, director of Farrells.<\/p>\n\"\"\n

"This is one of the most exciting and distinctive districts in Hong Kong and we tried to contribute to that by designing this pool as a new community hub with a dynamic architectural form." The building owes its characteristic shape to the unique triangular location. Inspired by a shell, the building faces the main street and tramway entrance to Kennedy Town, serving as a symbol for the community.<\/p>\n

Hong Kong: The Spectacular Pool<\/h2>\n

The form of the sweeping zinc roof responds to the building's context: the orientation of the outdoor pool maximizes views of Victoria Harbor and outlying islands, while shielding swimmers from the noise and pollution of the main bus and tram routes to the east.<\/p>\n

The self-healing properties of natural zinc and the uniform absolute patina were suitable for a building constructed in two phases with a gap of six years between them. Key criteria for choosing the materials for the facade and roof were light weight, the ability to extend the pool room, transparency and performance against solar gain.<\/p>\n\"\"\n

Laminated glass with a high-performance PVB layer was chosen for the window walls, while an insulated PTFE membrane was used for the roof skylight, flooding the indoor pool hall with pleasant, diffused natural light. Operable windows allow for natural ventilation of interior spaces, reducing reliance on air conditioning.<\/p>\n
