Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, E. coli O157:H7 is an exception, as it produces a toxin that can cause serious illness. This bacteria can grow rapidly in wet environments, especially under the right conditions, so regular water testing is vital.<\/p>\n<h2>How is water contaminated?<\/h2>\n<p>Contamination of water with E.coli O157:H7 occurs mainly through human and animal faeces. Bird droppings are a frequent source of contamination, especially for outdoor pools. Poor personal hygiene and lack of proper hand washing are also important risk factors. Once the bacteria enter the water, under suitable conditions (high temperature, low disinfectant levels, pH&gt;7.8 or pH&lt;7.2) they begin to multiply, increasing the risk of contamination for the people who will use these facilities.<\/p>\n<h2>Transmission and symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>Inadvertent ingestion of contaminated water can lead to gastrointestinal diseases such as hemorrhagic colitis. Children and the elderly in particular are more prone to serious complications such as hemolytic uremic syndrome. Swimmers must observe strict hygiene measures and avoid swimming in case of gastrointestinal disorders.
