The offsetting of the energy produced and consumed, which is known as net-metering, is one of the tools for promoting self-production and self-consumption with the help of renewable energy sources (mainly photovoltaics and small wind turbines). Net metering is applied in several countries and allows the consumer to cover a significant part of his own consumption, while at the same time giving him the possibility to use the grid for indirect storage of green energy.

With Law 4203/2013 (Government Gazette 235A/1-11-2013) as well as the Min. Decision of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on 30/12/2014 institutionalized for the first time the possibility for consumers to make use of self-generation through net-metering.

At the moment, self-generation in Greece is only applied to photovoltaic systems, which can be installed on buildings or on land, or other structures, including those of the primary sector (agricultural warehouses, livestock units, etc.) in accordance with the current urban planning legislation. The systems are installed in the same space as the consumption facilities they supply or in an adjacent space.

When the energy produced by the photovoltaic systems is less than our consumption, then the additional energy we need comes from the PPC network. Otherwise, when the energy produced by the photovoltaic systems is greater than our consumption, then the extra energy we produce is channeled into the grid. The energy produced and consumed are accounted for on an annual basis.

Self-generation systems do not need energy storage and therefore there is no cost of energy storage (batteries) which is mostly characterized as unprofitable.

LIGHTING CONTROL SYSTEM

Motion detectors detect movement or the presence of a person in their detection field, directly activating the loads they control (eg lighting, air conditioning, etc.) and are therefore an ideal solution for saving energy in modern installations (the loads only work when there is real need and not in vain).

An example of application are hotels – Often customers leave the lighting and heating/cooling system on when they are not in their rooms resulting in energy consumption. Fortunately, hotels can significantly reduce the impact of this wasteful habit by using energy management systems and limiting the operation of lights and heating/air conditioning systems in empty rooms.

The most commonly used energy management systems for guest rooms include motion detectors as well as energy saving switches.

A motion detector detects the presence of people in the guest room. When occupied, the detector allows the lights and heating/air conditioning system to operate normally. However, when the detector does not detect the presence of people, it turns off the lights and either turns off the heating/air conditioning system or temporarily adjusts the thermostat to a more energy-efficient room temperature (eg, a higher temperature during the period of use of the air conditioners, or a lower temperature during heating usage period).

An energy-saving switch system uses a special switch, located next to the door, that turns on when the customer's key card or key fob is inserted, allowing the lights and heating/air conditioning system to operate. When the customer leaves the room, they remove the key card from the switch, which automatically turns off the lights and the heating/air conditioning system (or puts the heating/air conditioning system into a more energy-efficient standby mode) after a short delay .

Energy management systems can often reduce guest room energy consumption by 15 to 30%, and achieve a payback period of 1 to 2 years.

The use of automatic control devices brings about a significant reduction in the energy consumed per final use. Automatic control arrangements can be local or central. The local control devices have the ability to control and adjust the operation of an individual system such as a pump (through speed regulators (inverter) to adjust the operating speeds at partial loads), a radiator body (through a thermostatic valve) or the distribution network (through a thermostat compensation for regulating the temperature of the transport medium) or a light (with local presence sensor) etc.

The central automatic control devices (Building Energy Management Systems - BEMS) are applied for the comprehensive energy control of a building installation.

Efficient and intelligent management of a building's energy and other needs can have significant benefits. A building energy management system (BEMS) is a sophisticated method for monitoring and controlling a building's energy needs. In addition to energy management, the system can also monitor other parameters related to the building. Such examples are heating, cooling, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, etc.

In the event that the installation of heating, cooling, air conditioning, domestic hot water, lighting, etc. has some automatic control and regulation device (central or local), then the energy to cover the required loads per end use is reduced and this reduction must be determined in the calculations. Conversely, when there is no automatic control device, the energy to meet the required loads increases. Therefore, the use of BEMS in industry and hotels can bring significant energy savings.
