There are four competitive swimming styles, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.

Swimming Style

Freestyle is the fastest of the four styles. The position of the body should be horizontal and flat so as to reduce resistance. The movement of the legs is continuous and starts from the thighs, thus maintaining the balance of the body.

The hands are what propel the body forward while the coordination of hands and feet is decisive for the smooth movement of the body.

In the process of learning free it is recommended to breathe from both sides usually every three hands. Inhalation is through the mouth when the head is turned to the side and exhalation is through the nose and mouth into the water.

Because of free breathing, the backstroke is considered the easiest of the four styles. The body should be on its back, well stretched, and on the surface of the water.

Particular emphasis must be placed on the pelvis, which either facilitates or hinders the smoothness of movement. The pelvis should be as high as possible on the surface. The aprons move continuously and rhythmically, with small and quick movements.

The movement of the hands is also continuous, having the opposite direction to that of the free hand. The backstroke it is the most "painless" of the four styles for this and is indicated for people with spinal problems.

Front

The front it is usually the third style taught to beginners. It is considered a relatively difficult style due to the peculiarity of the movement of the legs but also the coordination between arms, legs and breathing. The term "frog" is often used so that students can more easily identify with the movement of the legs.

The arms start stretched out in front, move continuously, always returning to their original position. The legs make the most effort to propel the body forward. In the front, the knees receive the most friction for this and should be avoided by people with injuries or sensitivities in the knees.

Butterfly

The butterfly is a progression from front swimming. It is a dolphin-like movement of the body moving both aprons at the same time. The movement of the arms in the butterfly is identical to the movement in the freestyle with the only difference being that the arms move simultaneously.

Due to the degree of difficulty and hyperextension of the spine, this particular style is not recommended for people with lower back problems.
