Hotel Carmen. Design Concept inspired by the Coral Reef of the Caribbean Sea

Exotic, sustainable and avant-garde design, inspired by coral reef of the Caribbean Sea. The design concept it focuses on representing an experiences for every visitor through a natural, unique and modern environment. Modular structure and high thermal efficiency

The building structure is fully regulated through the frame-based construction system, which makes for a logical, simple and economical construction.

The entire building uses the Novidesa construction system (high-density polyurethane), which is highly efficient in thermal and acoustic insulation. The first principle of this project, which is functionality, was solved by making better use of space.

Second, since the site offered a small facade facing the sea and a large facade facing the street, the solution was to rotate the building by 30 degrees to ensure that all rooms faced the ocean. The project was developed on three levels of rooms, in addition to the following on each level: a basement with communal areas, a ground floor with reception and a restaurant and a rooftop pool on the third level. High performance with low energy consumption

The entire building is built with a high-density polyurethane construction system, which prevents solar radiation heating and incorporates double glazing, achieving a fully insulated system when air conditioning is required. The design features a highly efficient use of natural air cross ventilation that keeps air conditioner consumption to a minimum.

In addition, the heat emitted works for the water heating. The water supply system is divided into sewage and grey, independently treated. In terms of lighting, the entire building has LED technology with low energy consumption.

Climate Analysis

The hotel is located on one of the most heavenly beaches of the Caribbean, on Calle 8 in Playa del Cármen, Quintana Roo. The climate of the region is hot and humid. The movements and angles of the sun were analyzed with solar geometry, which allowed us to implement effective shading architectural elements. Overhangs and grids were installed to prevent direct sunlight from entering the interiors and to block the south and west facades.

The average annual temperature ranges between 28º C and 32º C (82º F and 90º F) in summer. and from 26º C to 27º C (78º F and 80º F) in winter. The insulation of the building was necessary to create comfortable internal temperatures. The thermal gain that the building would experience was calculated using a thermal digital analytical model, achieving greater gain on the roofs, South and West facades, all of which dictate the choice of materials. Knowing that the prevailing winds in the Caribbean come from the Southeast and the East, it was decided to rotate the rooms by 30 degrees to capture the wind and extract it through a duct on the ceiling of the corridor, creating natural ventilation in each space. Ahorro Energy Saving

The building is designed to reduce energy consumption through the effective design of the construction, plumbing, electrical, electronic and cooling systems, which play a fundamental role in the building's energy efficiency. Innovative Materials

Hotel Carmen

In order to prevent heat from passing through thermal conduction into the spaces, innovative materials were used. The entire building, both its slabs, exterior and interior walls were constructed with high-density polystyrene insulating materials. All windows are made of triple glazing with argon gas with very low thermal conductivity. User experience through art

Having solved the principles of utility and logic, we then focused on aesthetics. After analyzing the context, we came to the conclusion that due to the location of the hotel on the coast of Playa del Carmen and the extensive number of competing hotels in the same prince line, the only way to stand out from the competition was to create a boutique hotel that adds value to customer.

In this case, the added value is a building that offers a relaxing experience, in harmony with nature, art and elegance for each of its users. The client's primary objective is to compete commercially on quality by offering a sustainable, unique and iconic product in the region.
