AIR RELIEF VALVE
A manual plastic valve, located at the top of a filter tank to relieve pressure inside the filter and remove air.
AUTOMATIC POOL CLEANER
A pool maintenance system that will agitate and sweep debris from inside the pool automatically.
AUTOMATIC POOL COVER
A heavy one pool cover connected electronically or manually that extends over the pool protecting against debris and temperature changes as well as adding an important safety measure.
BACKWASH
The process of thoroughly cleaning the filter, reversing the flow of water through it, making dirt and water a thing of the past.
BAJA SHELF
Also known as a sun shelf or tanning ledge, which is a shallow extended shelf designed for lounging and tanning.
CALCIUM HARDNESS
How much calcium carbonate is in pool water?
CALCIUM HYDROCHLORITE
Chlorine in powder form.

CHECK VALVE

A hydraulic component used to change the direction or redirect the flow of water. Some diverter valves are used in pool combinations to allow the use of hot tubs.
DRAIN
This term usually refers to plumbing equipment that is installed on the suction side of the pump in pools, spas, and hot tubs.
EXCAVATION
Digging a large hole in your yard, perfect for installing the pool.
EXERCISE POOLS
Fitness pools are small pools, known as swimming spas, usually built with jets to add resistance.

FILTRATION
The rate at which water travels through the filter.
FIRE FEATURES
A category of additional pool features, fireplaces, fire bowls and other accessories that use fire.
FLAGSTONE
A flat, hard, natural rock used for walkways, decks.
GREEK POOLS
Greek swimming pools are usually rectangular in shape and not very sharp, usually sharp corners. The Greek ones are basically squared.
GROTTO
The grotto is a large rock pool water feature built over and around a cavernous swimming area.
GROUT
A paste-like mixture applied between tiles that dries and becomes solid, creating an insoluble surface.
HARDSCAPES
Hardscapes refer to every structure that is built. Like natural stone and concrete.

HEATER
Natural fuel, electric and solar devices are used to heat the pool water.
INFINITY POOL
This pool creates the illusion of infinity.
INLET
The pool pump that pushes the filtered water back into the pool with momentum.
KIDNEY POOL
They are called so because of their special bean-like shape.
LINER
Also called vinyl liner, it acts as a container to hold water.
LIQUID COVER
Liquid sunscreens cover with a thin film that protects the water from evaporation. Pool glossary

L-SHAPED POOL

L-shaped pools are created with two rectangular pools that form a 90-degree angle.
MAIN DRAIN
A hydraulic fitting installed on the suction side of the pool pump. Also referred to as a drain located in the deepest part of the pool or hot tub. The main pool drains do not allow the water to drain into the waste, but rather connect to the pump for circulation and filtration.

MOSAIC POOL TILE
Pool mosaic tile is made of smaller pieces of tile that are joined together to create a larger design.
NEUTRALIZER
A chemical that renders chlorine or bromine harmless. Used in test kits to neutralize the bleaching effect of chlorine or bromine. It is sold as a chlorine and bromine neutralizer so that high levels do not affect swimmers.

OXIDIZER
A sensational chlorine-free compound that destroys contaminants in pool water without increasing chlorine levels.

PAPALA

It is an open-air structure with a thatched roof, popular for its comfortable design.
PAVERNS
Paving small slabs of clay, brick, stone or concrete.
PERGOLA

PH
Abbreviation for Potential Hydrogen. It shows the level of acidity or alkalinity of the water on a scale ranging from 0-15. A low ph can cause metal corrosion and eye irritation. A high ph can cause scaling and eye irritation. The ideal ph in swimming pools is 7.4-7.6.
PUMP CAPACITY
The volume of water that can be moved in a pump in a specified period. This is referred to in gallons per minute or gpm.
PUMP CURVE
It is the pump performance curve. A graph representing the ability of water to flow through a pump under a given resistance.

RAISED BOND BEAM
The connecting beam of the pool that rises vertically in one part of it creating a wall.
RECTANGULAR POOL
A rectangular pool with clean lines and sharp angles.
RETAINING WALL
A wall that holds your yard back from erosion and landslides caused by hills and slopes.
ROMAN POOL
Roman-style pools are recognizable for their rectangular shape.
SOLAR COVER
A cover that when placed on the surface of your pool, increases the temperature of the water by absorbing and transmitting solar radiation.

STONE VENEER
Stone veneer is a manufactured stone that simulates the look of natural stone and is applied to the exterior of structures and buildings.
SWIM-UP-BAR
A built-in pool feature that includes a large horizontal shelf above the water for drinks and snacks.
TOP CAPS
Usually made of resin. The top cap covers the top plate and helps give a pool a more finished look.

TOP PLATES
A plate attached to the top of each upright of an above ground pool. They provide attachment points for the top track and top rails that run between each post.
TOP RAILS
The top rails form the top ledge of the pool with a width of up to 12΄
TOP TRACK
Also called stabilizer bar. The top rail rests over the top of the wall and helps keep the pool liner securely in place.
UPRIGHTS
The uprights provide support to the wall and top frame of the pool. The uprights can be up to 12'' wide depending on the pool model and the material it is made of.

VACUUM

Suction device for collecting dirt on the sides of the pool.

VINYL LINER
The vinyl membrane that acts as a container to hold the pool water.
WATER FEATURES
A category that includes waterfalls, bowls, fountains, deck jets that integrate with water.
WATERLINE TILE
Tile that is placed in the pool just below the cover and deck. The tile must be water resistant as it is constantly submerged in your pool.
WEIR
A small floating "door" that automatically adjusts to small changes and ensures continuous water flow.
ZERO ENTRY POOL
Also known as beach entry pool. These pools have a sloping beach-like entrance.
