Myth #1
The pool water is unsanitary and smells bad

Reality: Pool water if we give it proper care can be crystal clear, spotless and odorless. There are quite a few who unfortunately have the wrong impression of pool water and these are people with bad experiences with hotel pools.

Myth #2
The strong smell of chlorine means that the water is disinfected more effectively

Reality:  The strong smell in the pool does not come from chlorine per se. A properly chlorinated pool, equipped with the correct machines and filters, does not smell at all.

The odor seen in some pools is mainly from chloramines which are created when chlorine comes into contact with contaminants in the water and their presence means that the pool has not received the right amount or combination of chemicals to disinfect it. So no, a strong chemical smell does not mean the pool is cleaner.

Pool water turns light hair green

Reality:  The culprit for the greening of the hair that gives that green tone to very light hair is the minerals in the water and especially copper.

Copper and metals may be added to the pool water to prevent algae (poor quality algaecides), they may enter the pool through the pipes, or the water in the area may have a high copper content. The solution; Wear a cap or rinse your hair thoroughly after each dip.

Myth #4
My pool looks spotless so it is spotless

Reality:  A swimming pool may look clean but not be. The absence of visible pollutants does not mean that the water is safe for swimming. Water turbidity from micro-organisms and harmful substances can take days to appear so don't rest on just cleaning the pool, but regularly check chemical and pH levels for abnormalities.

I have properly disinfected the pool so it's okay if I swallow its water

Reality:  No, it's okay to swallow some water if you've tested your pool water and taken care of it properly. However, the pool water is not potable as you understand.  

Even if the disinfection of your pool has been done to perfection, some bacteria or micro-organisms are not neutralized in seconds, they take time and it is not worth risking it under any circumstances. Your pool water may be crystal clear and delicious, but it's not for drinking, it's for dipping in….
