The recent opening of the Dagály Aquatics Complex in Budapest, Hungary – which will host the upcoming World Swimming Championships FINA – underlines the important role that PENETRON crystal technology plays in the construction of small and large pools.

Swimming pools for residential use, hotels and competitions are usually made of concrete. However, to ensure leakage prevention and effective waterproofing, an understanding of the technical issues arising from contact with water is essential.

“Watertightness issues can arise at any time, even in durable concrete mixes that meet EN 206-1:2006, such as mix specification, performance, production and compliance,” explains Christopher Chen, Director of PENETRON Group. "New pools may develop holes, cracks, voids or damage from equipment perforations and other construction issues."

Large concrete structures, which must hold huge amounts of water, require materials that can withstand hydrostatic pressure. According to the "Report on Chemical Admixtures for Concrete" of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), crystalline admixtures such as PENETRON ADMIX reduce the permeability of concrete and are the most effective solution against hydrophobic materials.
