The unique Seehotel Ambach Ensemble on Lake Calvados, in South Tyrol, Italy, was extended by the addition of an under-roof, which houses a Jacuzzi, Finnish sauna, steam rooms and an outdoor pool. Modern hotel
In order to expand the facilities of this hotel, which started operating in 1970, a modern entertainment space added to the shore of the lake. To realize the project, styles and materials from that region were selected, adapted and reinterpreted based on modern architecture.
Inspired by the lake
The architect who undertook the project clearly drew on the European tradition of the garden shed. Low uprights raise the building above the landscape, giving the illusion of a boat reaching the shore of the lake. The 250 m² spa with arcade unfolds at the back of the park within the orchard. The three wings of the facility face three different directions: the hotel, the lake and the mountains.
The precious construction materials
As construction materials, apart from the glass used for the transparent facades, a material with a more short-lived presence than cement – wood – was used for the rest of the constructions. Great attention was also paid to the woodwork, which was sanded and varnished to resemble the type of wood used in shipbuilding. So the dark tone contrasts with the bright cleanliness of the hotel.
